In my work as an instructional designer, I have been often asked to create “how-to” documents for instructors and for students.  I am including here two documents I created specifically to help instructors when they are recording audio clips for courses, as well as a video piece I co-created to help instructors (and others) understand how to define various media pieces.

The first document I created is entitled Tips for phoning in or recording audio, and is linked below.  This document was circulated to all Distance Education Services (DES) instructional designers for their use, and was included as a resource on the DES website.  This document walks instructors through how to create audio clips by leaving voicemail messages, and gives them some general tips on creating good audio pieces.

The second document is entitled Downloading and using Audacity to record audio and is linked below.  In addition to being circulated to DES instructional designers, this document has also been used by our Onlinehelp Desk to circulate to students who need to record audio for coursework.

Related to recording audio and producing media is a video that I co-created with our media producer (now retired) entitled Media Elements Defined (linked below).  We created this media piece to help course developers and instructors understand the various types of and uses for media in online courses.  NOTE:  This video may not play in Firefox, so it’s recommended you try opening it in Internet Explorer.
